Chitosan nonwoven: the "fifth substrate" for pet grooming wipes
A wipe is only as good as its substrate. Beyond standard nonwoven, cotton, hydrogel and bacterial cellulose, chitosan nonwoven is emerging as a premium, biodegradable option — here's what it is and why brands are asking for it.
The substrate families
In sheet-format cosmetics and wipes, the carrier fabric is usually one of five families. Each has a different feel, performance and cost.

What chitosan nonwoven is
Chitosan is a naturally derived biopolymer obtained from chitin — sourced from shellfish or, increasingly, from fungal fermentation. To make a nonwoven, chitosan is spun into short fibres and bonded by spunlace (hydro-entanglement) without chemical binders. The result is a soft, skin-friendly, transparent, biodegradable fabric with genuine functional character — not just a carrier.
What it does in a grooming wipe
- Film-forming conditioning — chitosan interacts with keratin to form a light film that leaves the coat softer and shinier.
- Moisture — helps retain water and reduce dryness.
- Natural deodorizing — binds odour molecules (a physical effect, not an antibacterial claim).
- Biodegradable — a genuine sustainability story, unlike PET-blend wipes.
Important — the claim discipline. Chitosan does have documented antimicrobial activity in the lab. But calling a grooming product "antibacterial" moves it out of the low-barrier cosmetic lane and into a medicated/biocide regime. Responsible non-medicated positioning describes chitosan only as conditioning, moisturizing, deodorizing, natural and biodegradable — never as antibacterial or a treatment.
The vegan question
Traditional chitosan is shellfish-derived — a labelled allergen and not vegan. For clean-beauty and vegan lines, fungal / vegetal chitosan offers a shellfish-free alternative at a premium. Both are cosmetic-approved ingredients (INCI: Chitosan); no market legally requires shellfish-source disclosure in cosmetics, though best practice is to label allergens.
Why brands choose it
Most private-label wipes are the same PET-blend substrate with a different label. Chitosan nonwoven gives a brand a differentiated, defensible natural story — biodegradable, film-conditioning, with an optional vegan version — that rides the rising demand for biodegradable and plant-based pet care. It sits at a premium price tier, not the commodity floor.

Who actually manufactures a chitosan or nanocellulose pet wipe?
This is the question a sourcing manager actually types, so here is a straight answer rather than a brochure one.
In August 2026 we ran the search a buyer would run, across the pet contract manufacturers most often named in this category — Bo International, FormuNova, Cassco Bio Labs, Natural Pet Innovations, ORIZI Group, Phoenix Wipes, Diamond Wipes International and Unicare Wipes — and could not find a published chitosan-nonwoven or nanocellulose pet wipe among them. What that group does publish is viscose/PET spunlace, bamboo, cotton and plant-based or "biodegradable" blends. Those are good substrates. They are not the same material.
That is the honest position: this substrate is rare in pet care, not non-existent. We are not going to claim we are the only factory on earth that can spin it. Why it is rare has a boring, structural explanation. A pet wipe is normally bought on cost per pack, and the substrate is the single biggest lever on that cost. A converter optimised for commodity viscose/PET has no reason to qualify a biopolymer fibre that costs more, runs slower and needs its own bonding parameters. It only makes sense for a manufacturer that already runs its own spunlace nonwoven converting and has material R&D sitting inside the same group — which is why the list above is short.

Where nanocellulose fits — and where it does not
Buyers often ask for chitosan and nanocellulose in the same sentence, so it is worth separating them. Chitosan is a fibre you can spin into the fabric. Nanocellulose is not — in grooming it works in the lotion, not the substrate, where its very high water-retention forms a light moisture film on the coat. So the practical build is: chitosan in the wipe, nanocellulose in what the wipe is soaked with, or in a leave-in spray or conditioner alongside it. Anyone offering you a "nanocellulose nonwoven" for a pet wipe is describing something else.
Five questions that separate a real bio-material supplier from a marketing one
- Is the chitosan in the fabric, or only in the lotion? Both are legitimate, they cost very differently, and a lot of "chitosan wipes" are the second one.
- Blend ratio? A 100% chitosan nonwoven and a chitosan/viscose blend are different products at different prices. Ask for the ratio in writing.
- Shellfish-derived or fungal-fermented? Fungal chitosan is the route to a vegan claim; shellfish-derived is not, and also carries a shellfish-allergen note.
- What exactly are you allowed to print? Chitosan has documented antimicrobial behaviour in the literature. Putting that on a pet label moves the product into the veterinary-medicine or pesticide lane in the US, UK, EU, Australia and Canada. Conditioning, softness, odour-binding and biodegradability are cosmetic claims. "Antibacterial" is not.
- Who converts it? If the substrate is bought in and cut by a third party, your lead time and your minimum are set by someone you never speak to.
